Due to a misunderstanding and a belief that its contents are quite difficult there are hardly any published papers on ZongShu. This study presents the details of Zongshu, and discusses its place within the framework of story writing theories. In addition, this paper discusses its role and value within the full body of work known as WenXinDiaoLong. The diversity of viewpoints presented by researchers on Zongshu can be primarily attributed to their lack of understanding of its content, and incorrect evaluation of the reason behind why LiuXie wrote ZongShu.
ZongShu's effects the theoretical framework of WenXinDialLong in the following four ways: 1) As an introduction to story writing theories, it leads other 18 theories of story writing. 2) It links stylistics and theories of story writing. 3) It distinguishes the boundary between theories of story writing and criticism. 4) It serves the role of making the theoretical framework of WenXinDiaoLong more thorough and complete.
