One of Korean traditional residential areas, the Bukchon District in Seoul is on the verge of destruction due to changes of the urban environment as well as institutional change in the execution of urban planning, which has led to indiscreet development of large lots, construction of buildings inharmonious with the surrounding traditional houses, and influx of commercial facilities.
Accordingly, as corrective measures for the protection of historical scape, the "Planning for the Conservation of Bukchon" has been established, but new methods are still needed to continuously preserve such traditional residential areas. The efforts made to preserve hanok through legal regulations, systems have been concentrated mainly on the external appearance, so an appropriate measures regarding spatial change followed by various requirements other than residential aspects have been lacking.
Even though the Gaedong has into small-scale commercial, tourist facilities, neighborhood convenience facilities and roadside row houses and modified disorderly hanok's, so regenerative continuous planning for preservation of roadscape, which is compatible with the traditional residential district, is especially needed.
This study suggest a regenerative planning that can regenerate the traditional residential district and cultural facilities so that both residents and visitors can leave traces of new plan.
