The reading motivation is an aspiration of reading. In general, a girl's motivation to read is higher than a boy's and also the extrinsic rewards would affect more than the intrinsic interests as the students reach later grades. There are several key factors which help students to develop their motivation to read and a problem awaiting solution as follows.
First of all, we should make the students have, and keep, self-respect as well as self-efficacy to develop a life-long passion for reading. And also, the practical purpose in reading such as achieving a good mark in an exam is one of the factors.
Secondly, the reading motivation comes from their attitude toward reading. The reading attitude is formed by extrinsic rewards such as praise and a good mark in an exam. Besides, intrinsic interests such as self-satisfaction, curiosity or an ever-increasing ability to read. All have a great effect on the reading motivation.
Finally, the quality of the reading material that the students read is of primary importance; as well as the teachers' encouragement to the students. It is said that the students are strongly influenced to develop learning motivation, absorption, value, expectancy and a sense of belonging in their studies by the teachers' encouragement and recognition of their efforts. In addition to these, there are the other factors in developing the reading motivation: teaching methods, assignments, learning environment, family, home environment and igniting hopes and dreams and so on.
The level of reading motivation is in direct proportion to the rewards they hope and is in inverse proportion to the effort they put in. By asking some questions both before and after reading, we could measure how these work to test this hypothesis.
