The power of rhetorics is overwhelming in the science reporting practice in which the media depend heavily on scientists as their news source and draw the attention of readers by the incorporation of "soft" element in news stories, and scientists are keen to promote the benefits of the cloning research in order to ensure ongoing support for research and to alleviate public concerns about the outcome of research. Logos, ethos, and pathos, the Greek philosopher Aristotle's three basic types of rhetorics, are applied to analyze news reports. Results show that cloning researchers quoted in news articles try to avoid ethical challenge by adopting logos strategy such as "I never destroy any life during my process", "The embryos are never formed", "Therapeutic cloning is a far different technology from human reproductive cloning", or using inaccurate and obscure term "the cells" instead of "the embryos". It is also found that they are more dependent on ethos and pathos strategies than logos strategy especially regarding bioethics debate. The media reinforce embryo cloners' mythical status and lead readers to accept biased view as truth by overusing ethos rhetorics such as "the devoted scientist", "science hero", "Nobel Prize candidate", or "the magician of rhetorics". News reports present that embryo cloners use pathos rhetorics such as "patients mobilization", "treatment of incurable diseases", "patriotism", or "economic development" to defend their disputable research. Depending on the wide and biased use of rhetorics by both journalists and embryo cloners, the media contribute to enhancing embryo cloners' position and fail to provide sound battlefield for balanced cloning debates, which results in distorted decision making process.
