This paper analyzes Korean newspaper articles of human embryo cloning between October 1997 and April 2003 to find out current conditions and problems of nine major newspapers in reporting the subject. For this purpose, the total of 674 articles are categorized into four reporting frames, such as science development, public responsibility, economic development and ethical orientation, and four scales of positivity regarding human embryo cloning, such as affirmation, conditional affirmation, negation, and no particular relation.
The results of analysis show that scientific articles are rare to find and most newspapers heavily depend on university affiliated scientists except the Kukmin Daily which cites the religious most frequently.
In terms of four news frames, public responsibility frame is the most popular, whereas economic development turns out to be the least. Scientists tends to stress science development along with public responsibility. By contrast, the religious and social movement groups hardly support science development frame.
Regarding the positivity of human embryo cloning, government officials, businessmen, medical organizations, and university and research affiliated scientists stand for the positive extreme, and the religious, women's and environment movement groups, and university and research affiliated non-scientists represent the negative extreme, while parliament members are in between.
Most newspapers similarly emphasize public responsibility the most, and then science development, ethical orientation, and economic development in order. However, there are some differences among newspapers according to their cited sources. For example, the Kukmin Daily's dependence on the religious is strongly related with its emphasis on ethical orientation as well as public responsibility, and the Hankyoreh's diverse sources also reflect its relative balance.
Finally, this paper reveals that Korean newspapers depend heavily upon two major scientists of human embryo cloning, which can easily mislead the public by presenting their interests only. Therefore, it is crucial to include diverse opinions and avoid the interested parties in dealing with ethically debatable subject such as human embryo cloning.
