The Swahili coast was once a major trade center on the Indian Ocean. Many archaeological excavations and researches carried out at once opulent coastal towns have verified the close contact between the East African coast and the rest of the world. Archaeologists have excavated many Chinese ceramics, celadon shreds and coins at Swahili coastal towns.
This paper explores the image of Chinese ceramics reflected in the Swahili classical verse known as Al-Inkishafi Al-Inkishafi , which was composed by Sayyid Abdalla Bin Ali Bin Nasir, has been rightly famed to be one of the most sublime literary works in the Swahili society. This classical verse consists of 79 stanzas, and its thematic pith and marrow can be summarized as the vanity and transitoriness of the earthly life.
This literary work manifestly impregnate with Islamic mysticism, commonly termed as Sufism, has a teleological orientation. It encourages people to follow in the footsteps of the Almight by distancing themselves from the earthly pomps and vanities. It further highlights these earthly pomps and vanities as an antipode to the idealized world mapped out by the Almighty.
What is of great significance is the fact that Chinese ceramics are symbolically represented as a concrete materialization of earthly pomps and vanities in stanza 38 and 50 respectively This serves to be a manifestation that Chinese ceramics were perceived by the Swahilis to be both a symbolic capital of socio-economic status and a mere object that can be equated with earthly pomps and vanities.
