This paper aims to reveal the process of reorganization of the literary field in the period of the foundation of the Republic of Korea by reading the magazine Shinchunji. Shinchunji played an important role in the literary field even though it was not a literary magazine, but a general magazine.
As a new government was founded in South Korea, Shinchunji confronted a change of condition of publication and also alterations of editors and publishers. As a result, the media-ideology of Shinchunji was changed significantly. Before 1949, it was one of the major field where various literary discourses conflicted with each other. However, it became a major media that right wing writers profess their discourses, ‘Soonsoo munhak’. By them, Shinchunji published before the foundation of the government was re-identified as a ‘left wing media’ to justify the alterations of editors and publishers.
The creators of media-ideology of the new Shinchunji defined ‘Chamyoe munhak’ discourse as a remain of the past. By that, they justified the fact that the ‘Soonsoo munhak’ discourse took the major role in the literary field, which in fact, became possible by political forces.
As ‘Soonsoo munhak’ discourse was made not for the exclusion of political actions of writers, but for the exclusion of political matters in literary works, the media-ideology creators of Shincunji was free to write political articles and literary works exclude political matters at the same time. Because this inconstancy produced a discord in the literary field, confrontations between ‘Soonsoo munhak’ and ‘Chamyoe munhak’ was about to become a major matter in the literary field one more time.
