Prudent management of the water supply source areas in the riparian zone is needed because of its strong impact on water quality and quantity. Through environment-friendly land use, the riparian zone helps to protect water quality through pollution source control and pollutant reduction. The Korean government established the “riparian zone”to protect water supply sources and purchased the zone through abstraction fees. Because of the lack of financial resources and landowner cooperation, the government could not purchase all the land in this environmentally vulnerable zone. For the effective implementation of water pollution prevention programs, a positive review of environment-friendly land management for water source areas is needed.
There are several methods for environmentfriendly land management, but the most effective and widely used method is through a land acquisition program. However, land acquisition in the riparian zone is not sufficient to guarantee environment-friendly land management because of the landowners’reluctance to sell their land and the multi-purpose land use. Thus, for environment-friendly management of the water supply source areas, effective land acquisition in the riparian zone must be continuous. Also, the implementation of appropriate management methods, such as land-leasing and conservation easement, to the appropriate areas should be considered in the long term.
