Pathos is one of the important subjects as much as logos, reason in the history of philosophy. In the strict sense, it could be said that pathos precedes to reason in the human thought process. So, pathos is an essential subject, when one seriously studies what human is. Michel Meyer, a new rhetor who is introduced in this article, is a philosopher saying that reason and pathos should be treated equally.
In the success of the definition of Aristotle's rhetoric, the unification of ethos, logos and pathos, Michel Meyer develops and declares that there are three elements of human nature and three components of philosophy. According to him, in other words, philosophy must be a composite work of ethos, logos and pathos. He also argues that, in the inquiry about human, the most crucial thing is to find the mutual relationship and the nature of these three things.
Consequently speaking, a human can only exist with the common characteristic of ethos, logos and pathos. And, in this sense, true philosophy will be the one which commonly considers the self(the right), the world(the common ownership) and the other(the duty). But, against these common senses, philosophy has only emphasized logos- centrism that reason and logic are truly important and are essential to the history of objectivity and science. Feeling, sense, and body which are related to pathos have been ignored for a long time and regarded as immoral concepts.
It seems that today's evaluation of pathos is no better than before. The problem is that the distinction of ethos, logos and pathos makes a cause of discrimination, and this discrimination causes a badly biased view about pathos. More importantly, many philosophers still believe that this biased view is simply right without any serious philosophical consideration. Perhaps, it could be right to say that there have been philosophers who are fully ignorant. This is why Meyer emphasizes the argument that pathos as much as ethos and logos, is the reason of existence of I and the human condition.
