The purpose of this study is to investigate the cognitive foundation of persuasion through pathos in Aristotle’s Rhetoric. In Aristotle’s view, Emotional arousal, that is to say pathos, belongs to pisteis and interacts with ēthos and logos. It also is necessary to persuade people to make a decision. Aristotle’s contribution lies in the fact that emotional arousal is promoted to a mode of persuasion coordinate with character and proof.
In connection with the emotional arousal, we can ask the question of the ground of emotion which is influenced by the speaker’s language. The cognitive theory of emotion can be the answer of this question, especially in Rhetoric. In contrast to the feeling theory which holds that emotions are to be identified with feelings and bodily impulses, the modern cognitive theory of emotion defines the essence of emotion as internal cognitive factors. Aristotle’s theory also supports the interaction between cognition and emotion. Aristotle offers the analysis of individual emotions in Rhetoric 2 and emphasizes the importance of the knowledge of emotion for persuasion in Rhetoric 2.1. When a speaker intentionally arouses the audience’s emotions through their knowledge, the audience’s emotional reaction occurs through the cognitive process of the mind. In other words, the cognitive elements such as beliefs and judgements are the essence of emotion, and they are the ground of being able to successfully persuade the audience.
