The aim of this paper is to establish a Korean perspective on the Manchu studies. Since China’s ‘Northeast Project’ began, the academic societies in South Korea have presented opposite views. Among them, the ‘New Qing History’, which has been suggested by American scholars since 1990s and considered a new perspective on Qing history, has recently drawn much attention. The ‘New Qing History’ is very similar to ‘Manchu-Joseon History(滿鮮史)’, which had been alleged by Japanese scholars during the age of Imperialism in an attempt to distinguish Manchuria from China. It seems to be embarrassing to find the logic of ‘Manchu-Joseon History’ from the view of the ‘New Qing History’. This embarrassment results from the fact that the Korean academic societies have not produced their own framework to explain the Manchu history. To establish our own framework, I tried to look at the material of the Manchu studies in the late Joseon period.
The geographic bounds of the Manchu studies in the late Joseon period were limited to the realm of the ancient countries in northern Korea because the Manchu studies began from interest in the ancient history of northern Korea. Thus, there was general perception that the geographical bounds were recognized as parts of Korean history. However, other ethnic groups except Korean people in the same bounds have been excluded from Korean history. Nonetheless, Heo Mok(許穆) and Jeong Yakyong(丁若鏞) considered history of the other ethnic groups in Manchuria a part of Korean history in their works. Therefore, it is possible that Korean history is explained as a multi-ethnic culture.
