This study looks into the characteristics and major specialization strategies of Northeastern Asia's major ports, especially those in Hong Kong, Singapore and Shanghai under the influence of changing port environment in these days, whether domestic or overseas. Next, it examines the current profile and features of Busan city's two ports, i.e, New Port and North Port, which are also typical harbors in Korea. In particular, it also compares and analyzes the characteristics of both ports according to so-called SWOT system, so that it can explore into any possible strategies for rational specialization of both ports on the basis of their features.
First of all, the harmonized co-existence of both ports requires sharing their own roles as harbor with each other and thereby making their respective port functions specialized by their own characteristics.
Conclusively, in terms of both New Port and North Port as located in same geographical location, it is more reasonable to build up rational and complementary strategies for making both ports specialized from national standpoint, rather than induce unnecessary competitions to preoccupy desired quantity of goods transported. In particular, for the advancement of both ports in Busan into the best harbor facility, it is also important to perform careful self-analysis, appropriate benchmarking for foreign successful cases, analysis based on effective demand forecast, and more.
