This study purposes to examine how Korean historical studies has continually shown interest on some features of history since the oldest Korean History Journal, The Journal of Chin-Tan Society, was published from the year of 1934 to 1990'. It also aims at investigating the periodical features in the aspect of history of research. The total 1,301 articles are chosen from the journals of Chin-Tan Society, Korean Historical Association and Korean History Research and thoroughly investigated.
Firstly, in terms of time, various research results are produced since the 1960s. Consequently the general fundamental theories of Korean history were developed in the 1970s which led to a big progress in both quality and quantity levels of research. After 1980s, most researches of quantity have been accelerated in great numbers, but after the 1990s, Korean historical studies are relatively stabilized and balanced in quality and quantity compared to the past.
Secondly, in terms of field, the proportion that occupies the study field is as follows; history of politics (25.2%), history of society (17.05%), history of ideas(15.7%) and history of economics (15.5%). It is totally understandable when we consider the priority of importance to grasp a certain society. However, among the number of 1,301 articles, the figure of those four sections is totally 954 articles (73.4%), which produce contrary evidence that other fields of studies have been unsatisfactory so far.
On the other hand, the periodical research distribution is seen as follows; ancient times (25.6%), medieval times (20.9%), modern times (33.2%) and modem and contemporary times (20.3%). The quite balanced figures suggest that the development of periodical studies has been projected relatively evenly. However, the study of history, as a part of the contemporary study, is impossible to ignore the social trend, but it is desirable to maintain the study boundary.
Korean historical studies will have to focus on the expansion of variety and openness in its development in the future so that the uniqueness and universality of study can be recognized as one of the desirable studies in the world. That also justifies our history and secure historical universality in the world.
