The goal of this paper is to advance a new discourse on prostitution, shedding light on the existential conditions of human beings in which diverse types of prostitution prosper. This paper pays special attention to the existential conditions of human beings as the antithesis of “labor” and “eroticism,” and investigates how the transformation of capitalism has altered them. The main principle of capitalism has changed from the means-ends rationality based on scarcity into the unconditional expenditure based on surplus. In this process of transformation, eroticism which has been repressed and sublimated becomes unfettered; the patriarchal family has been imploded and the entire society has become eroticized. What matters is the loneliness of the discrete being. Eroticism is the denial of the fact that I exist discretely in this world and will disappear soon in isolation, which the development of contemporary capitalism exacerbates. Prostitution in our times is merely a peculiar variant of eroticism. Prostitution is a moment of awakening all of us who have been fatally addicted to growth-centrism. We have to move the focus of our question from “How can we grow more?” to “What prevents us from being free to act even though our society has already grown enough?”
