As it was controversial to translate the sky into ‘SORA’(空) or ‘TEN’(天) when the collection of Dongju Yoon’s poems, The Sky, the Wind, the Star, and a Poem, was rendered into Japanese, the sky is an overarching keyword in Yoon’s world of poetry. The sky is a sum of natural objects, which is embodied as lucidity, height, innocence, center, and order. It is not an abstract symbol, but it is represented as a sensuous object that is to be experienced concretely. It is “A night of counting the stars” that realizes the dynamic meaning of the sky. The sky is a complex space of consciousness in which there is entanglement of the vehement passion of youth and high standards for a moral life. The sky stimulates romantic sensitivity, calls for internal memory, and furthermore induces ethical awareness.
Youth adopts the sky as an index of life: the higher the ideal for authenticity is, the more tragic failure that is to be experienced, which is inevitable. Youth that confronts with the sky hesitates, splits, and sometimes risks pseudo death, while pursuing the ideal for a pure and true self. The sky is represented as a personified life which shines, moves, and shouts, and the narrator responds to the sky with all senses, yearning to assimilate with the sky. The sky, a duelist that used to press the self, is gradually internalized as a realistic and historical space. A ‘shadow’ is a dark inner side which is acquired when the self meets with the sky or the sun. The height and lucidity of the sky become part of the narrator, appearing as the depth and darkness of a shadow. The sound of the sky is transformed into providence, which is an internalized voice.
The sky induces ultimate concern for the world, and it becomes a transcendental reference for an ethical life, in which sense the sky imparts a pan-religious meaning. Yoon’s writing of poetry is a practical expression of intense experience with the sky.
