This paper aims to the process to postwar framework of regionalism from pre-war regionalism or “Great East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere” which had been constructing until the end of the Second World War. I focus on the Japan’s postwar economic reconstruction plans, the place of East-Asian countries and areas in the plans and the issues of reorganization of politico-economic relations with Korea. Immediately after the war ended, Japan was interested in maintaining her dependent territories and her influence on them.
In final phase of the war, some officials of the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had envisioned the postwar economic recovery, assuming the defeat of Japan. They began to rebuild the concept of regional order between Japan and East Asian countries after the war. Their analysis influenced the establishment of Japan’s postwar policy in Asia. They focused on the “middle nature” of Japan between developed Western countries and underdeveloped East Asian countries like Korea. They thought that Postwar East-Asian countries needed low-technology manufactured goods relatively cheaper made by Japan. Doing collaborative research with government-sponsored research institutes, they also started to do their researches on political economy of former dependent territories based on the perception of colonial Korea. Many officials, businessmen and intellectuals who had done their activities in Korea and returned to Japan after the war, participated in the projects of the study of colonial Korea.
