This essay investigate the aspects of criticism against the Patriarchy Ideology in Park Wan Suh's Novel focus on Bad Year of City. Park Wan Suh have interested in the problem of the Patriarchal System from many different angels. Bad Year of City written in the early stage of Park Wan Suh's literature also shows a critical mind of author on the Patriarchal System. In this novel, the Patriarchal System is a vehicle to show the author's critical recognition of reality. This essay ultimately aims to reveal achievement of Park Wan Suh as realist through the aspects of criticism against the Patriarchy Ideology.
In Chapter 2, I discuss that the popular belief about twins of brother and sister is a Symbol-system to internalize the Patriarchy Ideology. The writer suggest it in climax of the novel through the tale of great-aunt grandmother. The structure of the tale is identical with the myth of Oedipus to symbolize the desire of patricide. In Chapter 3, I investigate the characterization in view of the vital component of the Patriarchy Ideology which is Economical Domination and Sexual Regulation. The Characters of this novel show many relationships of between the Economical Domination and Sexual Regulation. According to the relationships, binary oppositions are revealed between the Characters. The binary oppositions between the women characters who actively embody the Patriarchy Ideology reveal the critical consciousness on the ‘Private Patriarchy’. The binary oppositions between men characters appeared through the metaphor of ‘mask’. They binary opposite inside and outside of the Patriarchy. This binary oppositions shows the critical consciousness on the ‘Public Patriarchy’ and the optimistic vision suggesting the possibility to overcome the Patriarchy Ideology. In Chapter 4, I discuss the possibility to establish the new Family Ideology through the twins walk of life. The family entertaining the superstitious belief are dissolved by them. They constitute new family through the union of spouses who have ‘natural healthy’.
Park Wan Suh expose the inconsistency and false of the Patriarchy Ideology, which comes down to the criticism of the ‘Public Patriarchy’ represented the nation. Park Wan Suh criticise the reality by the medium of the Patriarchy Ideology characterizing the characters belong to different social groups as the poor concubine, the nouveau riche, and the unjust judge. So, the writer has just view of the realist.
