In 1910, Die Ermordung einer Butterblume, which was published for the first time in Der Sturm magazine. has been appraised as ≪A masterpiece short story of Doblin", "The best modem short , and "The pioneer work in the expressionism . Die Ermordung einer Butterblume, which has been already considered as the most epoch-making work among contemporary literatures, is worth being most remarkable short story among his early works, which show his own theme and literary style. Also, it has been affected directly or indirectly by his academical researches for psychopathological phenomena and experiences as a neuropsychiatrist. Thus, some critics comment on this work as the research about psychopathy.
Based on these backgrounds, this paper focuses on the extent including the psychopathological elements in the aspects of theme and style, and how to express the madness as the manifestation of irrational and unconscious things dwelled in the inside of citizens. As a result of this study. we concluded that this short story of Doblin elaborately describes the alienation and psychopathological issues of functional beings deep-rooted into modem industrial society by the literary expressions. In addition, it is confirmed that Michael Fisher as a hero in this story shows both citizen as a latent criminal and madman as an anti-civic phenomenon. In connection with these facts, the author gives a positive evaluation for the madness of unconscious citizen from the viewpoint of the recovery of human nature, but shows hostility towards rational and conscious civil nature. And then, in connection with literary expression of madness, Doblin achieved the successful combination between psychopathology and literature in this literary work through the expression in word of the madness as an extreme psychological situation of citizen. In other words, he is excellently describing the psychopathological phenomena of the citizen's madness by forms of extremely modern and pure-literary expressions. Moreover, since the modernity of this work has been confirmed on the basis of its rigorous structure, suggestive symbolic nature, radicalness in language means, and polysemous open end, this short story of Die Ermordung einer Butterblume, has been appraised as the pioneer achievement in the expressionism.
