This research was carried out toprovide effective exercise method and rehabilitation program for the elderly suffering from degenerative arthritis. Based on a subject of female elderly over 60 and under 70 years old, and suffering from degenerative arthritis, it measured leg muscular strength, leg length, and range of motion(ROM) according to groups divided into aquarobic, swimming and control groups, and exercised for 12 weeks with 60 to 70% of maximal heart rate. In the change of leg muscular strength, left and right legs muscular power in raising legs significantly increased (p<.001) in aquarobic group after 6 and 12 weeks exercise more thanpre exercise. In isometric leg strength, left and right legs strength showed significantly increase (p<.001) in aquarobic group after 6 weeks exercise more than pre-exercise, and 12 weeks exercise more than 6 weeks exercise. In swimming group, right leg strength showed significantly increase (p<.001) after 6 weeks exercise more than pre-exercise, and 12 weeks exercise more than 6 weeks exercise. There was no change in control group. In change of ROM, aquarobic group showed significantly increase (p<.001) after 12 weeks exercise more than before exercise. Right knee angle significantly increased (p<.001) after 12 weeks exercise more than before exercise and 6 weeks exercise. In swimming group, right and left knee angle in raising legs numerically increased after exercise, compared with it before exercise. As all results wereput together, aquarobic exercise more effective than swimming on leg muscular strength and ROM for the elderly suffering from degenerative arthritis.
