This study investigated 104 Korean students' communication strategies for Korean speakers and English speakers. The results show that they would employ the same strategies for displaying the input values to both Korean and English speakers but different strategies for output modes to English speakers, as in Yu(2006). It is discussed that the Korean students would use hints and indirect expressions, i.e., Brown & Levinson's (1987) ‘off-record’ strategies, and ‘we-solidarity’ to Koreans, but ‘clarity’ and ‘bald on record’ strategies to English speakers. Because of anxiety in making mistakes, listening to the other and focusing on kinesics were significantly preferred in English conversation to negotiate the meaning. The students would also employ the silence strategy to English speakers, thinking that silence would be appropriate in English conversation. The paper also discusses differences in communication strategies based on the students' English proficiencies and genders. There was not a significant difference in English proficiency between genders. However, females might negotiate meanings more actively than men in English. It was more likely for the students with higher English proficiency to accommodate their communication styles to English speakers than the students with lower English proficiency. The former thought that the main reason of miscommunication and conflicts in intercultural communication was socio-cultural differences rather than the matter of English grammar, while the latter believed that the problems were caused by English grammar not by socio-cultural differences. All the students reported that they had difficulties in vocabulary in English although the students with lower English proficiency had difficulties in the other areas, such as grammar, pronunciation, ready to conversation, and silence. Thus it is needed to emphasize on vocabulary in English education.
