This study sheds light on questions of proficiency pairings and the effects of productive skills in a synchronous text chatting context. A total of 24 Korean EFL students took part in the MSN messenger text-chat program for 40 minutes once a week for 12 weeks in a campus computer lab. According to their language proficiency, students were assigned into two groups where they were paired with one partner: the homogeneous group (Higher-Higher) and the heterogeneous group (Higher-Lower). I compared the effects of proficiency level on how much speaking and writing skills were improved in the different pairs. Research instruments are an electronic text-chat program, a cloze test, an essay writing, the speaking English proficiency test (SEPT). Quantitative findings of the study show that 1) synchronous text-chatting interaction had a significant impact on improving student's writing proficiency; 2) synchronous text-chatting interaction has not enhanced speaking proficiency; and 3) the effects of proficiency pairings showed that there was no statistical difference between the two groups, homogeneous and heterogeneous group, in terms of improvement of productive skills.
