Herwungdang Bow(1507-1565) and Toegye Yi-Hwang(1501-1570) whose socialㆍpolitical reality and position each person was faced with had been clearly different even by living in the almost same era, we have attempted to clarify what correlation exists between the literature and the spirit of times by comparing and investigating the intention of awareness contained within the works of these two people.
As a result, although the heart of trying to find the tranquility of consciousness by absorbing into nature avoiding various types of complexity in common customers is the thing that universally exists beyond the characteristics of the times, the investigation spirit on the origin of existence was shown as moving more toward nature in both cases in the midst of the massacre of Confucian scholars being continued and the Buddhism under oppression.
Therefore, as a result of comparing the nature poetry of Yi-Hwang and Buddhist poetry of Bow on how the details perceived in the humanized natural beauty were expressed in the work, Yi-Hwang considered that the nature that possesses the aloof appearance without being swept away by social conditions is the thing that indeed makes people look back on their true heart to make them reach the mental state which is only good as he emphasized the harmony with nature. This seems as if unity with the nature was desired for along with the appearance and attitude of liking mountains or waters. While this does not separate from reality, it was considered as one side of expression to seek the 'Tao'.
Bow's Ilsimchamgu (Inquiry with heart and soul) that 'Tao' lies in the way people live and that it is the very way of practicing the good deed states that this must be done through Ilyongjimun (reaching the door by daily use). Moreover, I thought a meaning that a Taoist who has reached enlightenment must come down again from that peak and return to the world of laymen while not giving off the smell of a Taoist at the same time might be contained together.
