This study purposed to prove the meaning and development process on the Generation Debate of poetical circles in the last-1930's. Based on the history of criticism in korean literature, the importance of Generation Debate in the last-1930's has been generally recognized. Up to the present, attention of study on the Generation Debate in the last-1930's was centered upon novel circles. But there was Generation Debate not only in novel circles, but also in poetical circles. And this Generation Debate in poetical circles express a important reaction to the 'distinct characteristics in Joseon-literature'.
Generation Debate of poetical circles has begun from critics of Lim, Wha. He had a negative position on the new figures, but specially expressed an positive attitude to some poets, that is Oh, Jang-whan, Kim, Kwang-gyun, Yoon, Gon-gang. His attitude had a special purpose to earn back a essence of Modernism literature by helping some new poet to real generation representative. So he bitterly criticized Jeong, Ji-yong and new poets of 『Mun-jang』 magazine. But new poets of 『Mun-jang』 magazine gave their opinion by repute to Lim, Wha's critics.
Actually this generation Debate of poetical circles was confrontation between Lim, Wha and Jeong, Ji-yong. And this opposition occurred from differences about 'who is the real new leader of new generation' and 'what's the new poetry spirit'. Lim, Wha regarded historicity and the sense of the tines as important with the object of succession of Modernism On the other hand Jeong, Ji-yong and new poets of 『Mun-jang』 magazine considered they would overcome a crisis of Joseon-literature through a pursuit on essential artistry. We can find comprehension and changing process of the time on concept of Modernism and concept of poetry from this Generation Debate of poetical circles.
