Mark 12:41-44 (and its parallel passage in Luke) reports that Jesus observed how the multitudes were putting money in the treasury in the temple. Many rich people were putting in large sums, while a poor widow put in two small copper coins. Jesus said to his disciples that this poor widow put in more than all the contributions to the treasury.
This widow in this story has traditionally been interpreted as a model donor who contributed from her want, and not from surplus. Or her story would have presented a real challenge to the richer members in the church: the larger contributions of the wealthy have not the weight of the paltry two coins of the poor.
For the proper understanding of the real intention of Mark the evangelist, however, we should pay more attention to the present context in which this text is presented. In the preceding passage (12:38-40), Jesus denounces the scribes who desire to honor and prestige and especially who "devour widows' houses." Immediately after this passage, Mark introduced our story(12:41-44) by the use of the catch-word, "the widow." The meaning of this key-word redaction is nothing other than that the sacrifice of this widow in 12:41-44 might be read as an illustrantion of how the scribes" devour the houses of widow." Accordingly, we should read this story of the widow's mite not so much as the praise of a model donor but as a severe warning against the scribes and especially against the temple system that takes advantage of the widow by prompting her to give her last cent.
