The aim of this article is to investigate and suggest how to teach the Bible successfully for students in Christian universities in Korea who come from diverse religious backgrounds.
Until now, in spite of its ethical importance and the secular use of teaching the Bible in the modern multi-cultural educational context, the Bible has largely been ignored by Christian universities in Korea. Given the statistical fact that Christian universities account for about 25 percent of all private universities in South Korea, and that about three hundred eighty thousand students in Christian universities have to take the module concerning Christianity, it is very important to utilize a new paradigm in teaching the Bible in a post-modern, multi-religious society like Korea.
For example, as a part of Christian general education, teaching the New Testament should be designed to provide the students with the integrated meaning of Jesus' story, the historical origins of Christianity, and literary characteristics of the New Testament documents. It is usually pointed out that a dogmatic approach to the Bible does not show a positive educational result because of the non-Christian students who are not adherents of the Christian faith. I hope that a new interdisciplinary paradigm for understanding the Bible will provide the students with insights to consider the Bible as the great classic of humanity and to learn how to interpret the biblical legacy in the present cultural context.
I trust that this article will give insight into teaching the Bible in Christian universities which are strongly confronted by the challenge of post-modernism and secularism.
