This article is aimed to do the following: 1) to diagnose the present state of the family/intimacy-related conflict in Korean society, 2) to reveal the structural backgrounds of these family/intimacy-related conflict, and 3) based on these analyses to suggest measures of social integration to resolve the gender conflict within the family. More specifically, this article is to utilize the second modernity and individualization theory of Beck, analyze the historical structural context in which the family/intimacy-related conflict occurs, and suggest a community family model of the 21st century and measures to support it.
The research findings are as follows: First, as to the present state of family/intimacy-related conflicts, they were noticeable in the decrease of marriage, increase of divorce, decrease of fertility rate, etc. which can be considered as the structural-objective dimension. However, it was also noticeable that in terms of the cultural-discursive dimension, it was not due to the change of the attitude toward the marriage and fertility, but because the conditions for marriage or birth were not available. Second, as to the structural background of the family/intimacy-related conflict, the author, applying the second modernity and individualization theory of Beck, could claim that the background of this conflict is due to the "individualization" pushed by the rapid industrialization and globalization. However, the individualization in Korean society is different from that of the Western Europe and could be characterized as "individualization without individualism." Third, the author conceptualized the new family which emerge with the individualization in Korea as "community family model of the 21st century" and tried to provide its characteristics. The "community family model of the 21st century" is, characterized by the coexistence of individual-orientation and family-orientation which is different from the Western "post-familial family." It has to fulfill the task of equality of the husband and wife as well as the compatibility of work and family. Fourth, for the social integration in the family/intimacy area, that is, for the "community family model of the 21st century", the author suggested support measures in terms of institutional and cultural motivational dimension. For the institutional measures, the author suggested the change of family law into marriage law for equal spouse relationship, and development of the family-friendly enterprise model, socialization of care work for the compatibility of work and family. As support measures for cultural motivation, the author suggested the development of the idea of equality through communication, the throwaway of gender division of labor, diffusion of the social ethics of the enterprises, and the discourse of socialization of care work, etc.
