In this thesis, I investigate the doctrine of the Trinity of the Eastern Orthodox Church which appears in the trinitarian theology of Vladimir Lossky. According to Lossky, the doctrine of the trinity of the Eastern Church is based on the tradition of negative theology and mysticism, in which the purpose of theology is not to obtain conceptual knowledge of God but to have mysterious union with the unknowable God. This negative and mysterious approach leads us to the Trinity.
The main points of the trinitarian theology of Lossky can be summed up as follows: ① Father’s monarchy as the source of the eternal procession of other hypostases and the principle of the unity and diversity of the Trinity, ② hypostatic independence of the Spirit who proceeds only from the Father, ③ distinction between the essence of the trinitarian God Himself as the eternal hypostatic existence and the external manifestation of the essence as the uncreated energy which emenates from the essence yet is located outside of it. ④ distinction be tween the eternal hypostatic existence of the Trinity(immanent Trinity) and the temporal economy of the Trinity in the creation(economic Trinity), ⑤ deification of the world and human beings in union with God.
v As a concluding remark, I mention three points. First, the function of energy in Lossky’s theology actually overlaps with the redemptive work of the Son and the deifying work of the Spirit of the economic Trinity. The second point is concerned with the separation in God of essence and energies or attributes including love. I argue that essence and attributes (energies) cannot be separated in such a way that attributes cannot constitute the inside of essence. The third point is about the panentheistic feature of Lossky’s Trinitarian theology. I designate the Trinity of Lossky as “energy panentheism in the economic Trinity” in the sense that in his theology human beings and creatures deify and are united with God through energy while God’s essence remains independent from energy or attribute, which is, I think, inconsistent.
