The purpose of this article is to explore the possibilities of Christian family education for the whole personality in modern society. With the radical change of modern society, the family type in Korea has gone through a varied shift; for example, one parent family type, adopted family type, and multi-cultural family type etc... The variety of the family type followed by social shift makes to reconsider the relationship between the parents and their children, further, it causes to trouble for practicing holistic Christian family education in modern society.
This article is proceeding like this: firstly, the characteristics of Comenius and Bushnell’s educational thoughts are presented by showing their common respects in spite of their gap of generation, country and academic background. Secondly, it is attempted to discover the common educational thoughts for the whole personality between School of Infancy by Comenius and Christian Nurture by Bushnell. As a result, it is discovered that Comenius and Bushnell’s educational thoughts for the whole personality have the same three aspects: first, they asserts the teaching of piety on the spiritual training of little children. Second, they put emphasis on moral education that regulated attitude or behavior toward family, work, and other elements of daily life. Third, they are concerned about physical nurture and discipline to be a means of grace. What is particularly noteworthy, the teaching of piety is a top priority for Comenius and Bushnell’s educational thoughts. Thirdly, it is suggested to reconstruct Christian family education’s new goal, new contents and new methods for the whole personality in modern society. It is very crucial point that a good enough nurture by mother in the early stage of child is required to fulfilling Christian family education for the whole personality.
This study is needed to be continued to provide more adequate programs for the holistic Christian family education. Further practical programs for the holistic Christian family education will help Christian parents who have difficulties for educating their children holistically in modern society.
