This study aims to examine the instructional effects of three types of form-focused instructions for English unaccusative verbs and show how differently form-focused instructions affect two different unaccusatives verbs (unaccusatives with transitive counterparts and unaccusatives without transitive counterparts). The impacts of the three different treatments - lexical decomposition (LD), negative feedback (NF), and input enhancement plus rule search(IE). - were compared quantitatively. The participants were the students who studied English as a foreign language at a high school in Korea. The data of 123 participants were analyzed. The instructional treatments were provided during four instruction sessions, each of which lasted approximately 30 minutes. The results show that the LD and the NF treatments had more positive effects on learning of English unaccusative verbs, the LD treatment had a more positive effect on unaccusatives with transitive counterparts (verb type 1) than the other treatments, and the LD and the NF treatments had a more positive effect on unaccusatives without transitive counterparts (verb type 2) than the IE treatment. The findings imply that the LD within form-focused instruction framework is beneficial for learners to acquire English unaccsuative verbs.
