This article examines the test validity of the Speaking Proficiency English Assessment Kit (SPEAK) test in terms of context validity. Weir (2005) defined context validity as equivalent to content validity. He suggested several features related to the context in which a test is developed and administered. In this study, the features encompassed topic, context, language function, preparation and response time, input source, and task difficulty. To examine the context validity of the SPEAK test, the following three aspects were questioned: the test-takers’ perceptions of the topic and context relevant to academic settings and their perceptions of other factors which could affect their performances (in terms of construct-irrelevant variance) the content analysis of the reverseengineered test specs of the SPEAK test and the content analysis using criteria to infer the features related to the context validity, which was based on the test specs reverse-engineered from the test. To investigate the test-takers’ perceptions, a needs-analysis survey and interview were carried out with thirty-six ESL students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In the reverse-engineering phase, the researcher wrote the test specs of the SPEAK test, and the test development team confirmed them. Based on the findings from the reverse-engineering phase, the content analysis was done to investigate the features of the context validity.
