Whether it is fiction or nonfiction, stories set in Shanghai were based on the writers’ experiences in the city. To Korean colonists, the city of Shanghai was a place of freedom where they could escape from subjugation of the Imperial Japanese government, at the same time, a place of tragedy where they saw the influence of the Japanese colonial rule reached beyond Korea towards dthe East Asia. Therefore, the city of Shanghai represented in their works that illustrated the lives of Korean residents can be divided into two districts: one district influenced by the Imperial Japanese government with or without realizing-Shanghai International Settlement-and the other district which was a place of freedom not influenced by the Imperial Japanese government at all-Shanghai French Concession.
Avenue Joffre in the Shanghai French concession was a place where they learn about new ideas and prepare for the practice and a place where they complete integration of love and revolution. In addition, it was “The road of patriots” who did never give up their will for the independence movement in spite of the exhausting life in a foreign country. Moreover, it was “The road of boheminan” where young people who fought against all types of dominion challenged the factional strife, segmentation, and the self-righteousness happening inside the nationalist group in Shanghai. They also sought for the freedom of humanity, literature and art. Contrary to this, North Sichuan Road in hongkou district in the Shanghai International Settlement was a place for people who did not bother with the independence of Korea or world peace. Rather, their goal was just to make some money and lead some stable life without worries about keeping the food on the table. This is why they gathered under the wing of the Imperial Japanese government.
Shanghai, a sea port city, clearly was a city of freedom where Korean patriots came flocking and planned machinatons and revolution to fight against the Imperial Japanese government. On the other hand, it was an extension of colonized Korea that brought mental frustration and horrible poverty to most of Korean residents in Shanghai.
