Flow is an optimal experience transforming mental state from boredom or anxiety to equilibrium. It is a melting pot of religious culture aiming at utopian values and mass culture searching for amused values, thereby integrating sacred value and profane fun.
The core structure of flow experience is the cognitive optimization process approaching a balance of challenge and skill. Flow has three attributes: mental attention, raised feeling, unaffected behavior. On the foundation of flow experience, religious culture and mass culture share narratives composed by stage structure, images arousing sympathy, and ritualized behaviors practiced repeatedly. Through these, they tend to combine individuation with socialization.
From the perspective of play pattern, variant modes of religious culture are divided into some typical groups. They are classified into traditionalism and liberalism according to whether it obey the rules or not. They are divided into anthropocentrism and theocentrism according to whether it emphasis on autonomous subjectivity of human will or not. Their combination are four: traditional anthrocentrism, traditional theocentrism, liberal anthrocentrism, liberal theocentrism. Therefore, religious culture aiming at utopian values has penetrated mass culture searching for amused values, the latter has exercised deep effects upon the former.
From the perspective of religious culture, flow experience has four modes of cultural realization: apophatic/kataphatic mysticism, intentional pietism, practical activism, divergent enthusiasm.
