This research studied the historical meaning of Salpuri dance and then analyzed the dance in order to find out how it is related with folk dance. It is thought that exorcists originally created Salpuri dance. They developed gestures that represent mans happiness, anger, affection and pleasure into a form of exorcism. This became Salpuri dance. And it is also thought that Hertun dance, which was danced as entertainment after folk play or exorcism, has gradually formed a part of Salpuri dance after experiencing some sort of changes. Salpuri dance was a way for exorcists to communicate with God to exorcise. Therefore it was a religious dance. However, a new law, which prohibited worshipping of shamans, was established as the social system changed. According to the law, exorcists were divided into two kinds: shrine and official Kisaeng, and all shamans belonged to Kisaeng houses. They danced there and this became Kisaeng dance. Later this formed so called Sarangbang dance which came out of famous Kisaengs creative sense of art and featured a kind of performance. In 1936, Mr. Han, Sung-juns Performance was first documented as a stage art. Admitting that dance is a form of art which seeks to show the desire for art by means of body, and that there is a physical limitation and it performs only once, and there is no physical form, and that it is difficult to write what it means, it was not easy for me to further study because of lack of documents.
