The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship of sports and political exchanges between South Korea and China Korea and China had shared a long history of relationship until the end of the world war II. Political, economic, and cultural exchanges were discontinued from the 1950s to the 1990s and reopened after the diplomatic relations of 1992. The influence of politics upon sports is relatively small compared to other areas such as commodities or the information trade. However, since the relationship is between two nations, the sport events also cannot be free &am the political situations of the two nations. Politics and sports can have positive and negative relationships. The best example of the positive effects is the historic ping - pong game between China and United States of America. The worst case can be the 1980 and 1984 Olympic boycott of Russia and USA. The political relationships of South Korea and China can be affected by the factor of North Korea. Fortunately the three parties have good relations nowadays in politics and on sports. However, it is necessary to keep friendly relations in sport regardless of the political relations. Therefore friendly relations are important economically as well as politically. The sports exchanges have started to occur since the resumption of diplomatic relations. They happen at various levels such as between cities, local governments, universities, the military and central government. The size or frequency of the exchange is not that much. Recently, two events have been of some importance. Firstly, the Chinese woman's professional basketball players joined the Korean summer league for 3 months. This had money and friendship advantages for both nations. This system of short term lease can be applied to other professional sports. Second, East-Asian soccer league is going to start soon. It will increase the favorable relations among the participating nations. This league may have the power to improve the league's sport arenas and it wi)1 expand the market power among the nations. The sports relations of South Korea and China have three aspects in the future. Sports activities should be continued regardless of the political situation amongst South Korea, North Korea, and China. Some multinational companies of South Korea and China as well as nations must notice the opportunity for market expansion through sports. The peoples of the two nations should also have cultural exchanges during the sport events,
