The material culture of Izhma-Komi reindeer herders has been rapidly changing over the last century. This change reflects developments in the “bigger world”, such as the rise and fall of the planned socialist economy in the Soviet Union, the post-soviet transformations and so on. However, they are also partly explained by the inner logic of the development of the Izhma-Komi reindeer herding as an economy and a way of life.
This article represents the first attempt to study changes in the “Big triad” of material culture(food, housing, clothes) among Komi reindeer herders since 1950s. This study is based on the results of the field work in June - July 2014. It demonstrates that their material culture had been influenced by the policies of every period in Soviet Russia such as Kolkhoz and Sovkhoz, and Russia"s conversion from communism to capitalism. The material culture of reindeer herding nomads has been developing through socialist and post-soviet periods and this development is still going on.
