The purpose of this treatise is to investigate the universality of Jesus Christ in Paul Tillich`s theological thought. Then, what Paul Tillich attempted to use his theological method used here is the `method of correlation.` It tries to correlate the questions implied in the situation with the answers in the message. Tillich understood the notion of symbolism as an interpretation of the religious language. This symbolism is used between concreteness and absoluteness in his `ultimate concern` or `being-itself` which indicates God. Therefore, it could be said that the issue of his theological thought, that is, `Jesus Christ` as the bearer of the New Being has been expressed as symbolism, and universality as a whole in his systemic theology. We can call religious symbols the depth dimension of reality itself, the dimension of reality which is the ground of every other dimension and every other depth. Therefore, the reality is not one level beside the others but is fundamental level, the level below all other levels, the level of being itself, or the ultimate power of being. The problem of truth in religious symbols is its adequacy to the religious situation in which religious symbols are created, and the criterion of all other symbols is that it implies an element of self-negation. Christianity expresses itself in such a symbol in contrast to all other religions, namely, in the Cross of the Christ. Jesus could not have been the Christ without sacrificing himself as the Christ. In relation to these symbolic views, the universality of `Jesus of the Christ` was analyzed as the central theme in his systematic theology. In this study I highlighted 3 dimensions, such as universality of the final revelation in Jesus as the Christ, universality of the trinitarian symbolic panentheism in the appearance of Jesus as the Christ, and universality of the historical Jesus in Jesus as the Christ. In addition, this paper discussed that the universal significance of the event, that is, the uniqueness and the universality of the Cross of Christ and the Resurrection of Christ is of importance. It is because the Cross and Resurrection of Christ are both an event and symbol. These raise the question of uniqueness of Jesus as the Christ. It has long been a controversy among the issues of universality. Paul Tillich had not dealt with this issue comprehensively and systematically. But he has argued for inter-religious dialogue which is not conversion. In conclusion, this paper tried to indicate that the universality of `Jesus Christ` in the thought of Tillich goes beyond the apologetic debate between absolutism and relativism. The most important aspect of Tillich`s apologetic approach is the description of the theological criteria for self-critique and rehabilitation.
