Analyzed in this article is the historical presentation and interpretation of the “Sambyeolcho forces’ resistance against the Mongol troops” inside “Governmentqualified” History and Society textbooks published in the 1950s and ’60s before the advent of “Government-designated” textbooks in 1974. Also intended is to determine the origin of a nationalistic point of view that is embedded somewhere in the overall Sambyeolcho presentation of these school textbooks. Hopefully through such task, the correlation between despotic power (such as Yi Seung-man and Park Jeong-hi regimes) and school textbooks’ historical presentation would be revealed.
The “Government-qualified” textbooks of the 1950s used the term “Sambyeolcho Revolt,” and only made a straight emphasis upon their fights as those expected from warriors. On the other hand, in the “Government-qualified” textbooks of the 1960s the Sambyeolcho struggle is presented in an independent chapter, which highlighted the subject matter in a fashion fairly different from before, by attempting a broad analysis of the general history of Koreans’ struggle against invading forces ‘within’ the discussion of the Sambyeolcho phenomenon. Compared to the 1950s, there are more lines uttering the independent nature of the Korean people as well as their self-worth in the 1960s’ textbooks. Ordeals and Overcoming was sort of a culmination of such trend, and such trend also made its way into the “Governmentdesignated” textbook of 1974, which was entitled National History. The dictatorship of Park Jeong-hi’s regime promoted national modernization, economy construction, independent state defense and extermination of Communism, so it demanded unity and sacrifice from the people. Nationalism dictated everything in the second part of the 1960s, and the Sambyeolcho struggle, which was depicted as a glorious effort to overcome a national crisis, kept being portrayed in such manner in not only the “Government-designated” textbook, but also the “Government-qualified” ones that came before.
