This is the dissertation on the government-designated history textbook which issued in the Third National Curriculum Period(1974~1981). At that time, Park Chung-hee administration released ‘Description Criteria’ for history textbook to keep history education under control. By taking this type of action, the ruling party and Park administration could infuse some misconception that the only way to maintain our democratic system is to unite behind ‘our leader Park’ and the group in charge of the power. Nation level curriculum of S. Korea has reached forward to the democratic values under the recognition that education is the basis of our democratic society. Nation curriculum also has provided more specific guidelines to social studies and history education, that is greatly required to cultivate democratic attitude among the people so that they may respect the other side's opinions and interests as well. But the ‘Description Criteria’ for history textbook which is made by Park administration look at that educational objectives from a biased point of view, and reinterpreted that in their distorted point of view. The educational authorities of that time protected their own and reinterpreted values of democracy by publishing government-published textbooks. Recently, the government decide to republish State-made' textbooks against the protests from the civic groups. With this change in the education policies, history education will be very rigid and will not concede to a variety of viewpoints. And most of all, under these situation history education are more likely to become a part of political propaganda.
