This article comprehensively examines the family registration official documents(戶籍類公文書), which was the core basis of the imperial administration, plus it’s application and reality.
First of all, this article scrutinizes the concept and it’s range of coverage of the family registration documents between the Qin-Han period. Family registration documents includes the entire Ji(籍) and Bu(簿) types of official documents, which was recorded with the family as the basic unit. In comparison, the term family register(戶籍) specifically points to official documents which the country office(鄕部) annually registered families of the governed villages(里) by documenting the individuals(口) within the family and their personal details centered on the patriarch(戶人), the representative of the family.
Subsequently, the article explores the organization and application procedures of the family registration documents, focusing on the country office which was actually in charge of the family registration documents among the provincial administration offices during the Qin-Han Period.
In addition, this article accounts for the formation process of the family register from the commoner’s who were the subjects of the family register view point and simultaneously, it examines the actual configuration of the Family Registration Wooden Scripts(戶籍木牘) in the LiYe Qin Bamboo Scripts(<里耶秦簡>).
Then the article, focusing on the recently excavated materials, arranges the sequence of the respective levels of the family register documents, made by the country office’s family register as it’s basis, into the order of country(鄕) → county(縣) → commandery (郡) → collective register(集簿).
Finally, the article discusses how the administrative force of the governmental power was whitewashed by giving attention to the aspects of the actual registration point of August and the government’s recognition of the lower strata’s age order(年齡秩序).
