In this paper, aspects of violence and properties of principal agents which appear when violence is faced are to be studied through sequence novels of “violence research” of Lee Dong-ha. According to words of him, “There are natural violence and artificial violence in it,” natural violence can be seen by eyes and can be grasped by knowledge. On the other hand, a premise that artificial violence has more complex structure than that could be gained. Artificial violence is not decided visually like natural violence. Artificial violence is structural and symbolic violence hiding behind natural violence.
In Violence Research and History Written in Water, aspects of visible and concealed violence are represented well. Especially, in History Written in Water, it is shown that how miserably visual violence is seen when the effect is lost. In Violence Therapy and Dried Persimmon, to maintain daily peace, violence which peace commits is shown in concealed ideology structure. To find out the ideology structure is parallel with understanding the literary world of Lee Dong-ha more deeply. Lastly, independence exposed through dance of a beetle was the thing revealed from the absence of violence ironically. A main agent is existence which should live shouldering deficiency. There is a time when this lack sometimes has a symbolic violent face.
But, regardless of the choice of “me” who tried to give any deficiency to my son, the son Uk-i inherited lack in another method. It is because lack is not a share of a giver but a thing of a receiver. As I came to know that the act of “me” who intend not to give lack can be deficiency, the symbolic world of Uk-i which is same as my childhood begins to be faced. The group of people appearing in the novels of Lee Dong-ha is not heroic protagonists. They are more ethical main agents who live with violence in mean lives.

이 연구는 이동하의 『폭력 연구』 연작 소설들을 통해서 폭력의 양상과 폭력을 대면했을 때 나타나는 주체의 특성을 연구하고자 하는 것이다. 폭력에는 자연의 폭력과 인위적인 폭력이 있다는 이동하의 말에 따라 자연의 폭력은 눈으로 볼 수 있고, 지식으로 파악 할 수 있는 폭력인 반면에 인위적인 폭력은 이보다 더 복잡한 구조를 갖고 있다는 전제를 얻을 수 있었다. 인위적인 폭력은 자연의 폭력처럼 가시적으로 판가름 되지 않는 폭력이다. 인위적인 폭력은 자연의 폭력 뒤에 숨은 구조적 폭력이며, 상징적 폭력이다.
『폭력 연구』 와 『물 위에 쓰는 역사』 에서 가시적인 폭력과 은폐된 폭력의 양상이 잘 드러나 있으며, 특히 『물 위에 쓰는 역사』 에서는 가시적인 폭력이 그 효력을 상실했을 때 얼마나 초라하게 보여지는지를 보여주고 있다. 『폭력 요법』과 『곶감』에서는 일상의 평화로움을 유지하기 위해서 평화가 자행하는 폭력이 이데올로기가 은폐되어 있는 구조와 대응되어 있다. 따라서 이데올로기 구조를 찾아내는 일은 이동하의 작품 세계를 더욱 깊이있게 이해하는 일과 일맥상통하고 있다. 마지막으로 『풍뎅이의 춤』을 통해서 사회적 주체는 역설적으로 폭력의 부재에서 발현하는 주체성이라는 사실을 확인하였다. 주체는 결핍을 떠안고 살아가야 하는 존재이며, 그 결핍이 때로는 상징적 폭력의 얼굴을 하고 있을 때도 있다. 『풍뎅이의 춤』에서는 아들에게 그 어떤 결핍도 주지 않으려 했던 ‘나’의 선택과 상관없이, 아들이 또 다른 방식으로 결핍을 물려받는다. 그 이유는 결핍은 주는 자의 몫이 아니고 받는 자의 것이기 때문이다. 결핍을 주지 않으려는 ‘나’의 행동조차도 결핍이 될 수 있음을 알게 되면서 ‘나’는 나의 유년시절과 똑같은 아들의 상징적 세계를 대면하게 된다. 이동하의 소설속에서 등장하는 인간군상들은 폭력을 해결하거나 일시에 말소하려는 영웅적 주인공들이 아니다. 비루한 삶속에서 폭력과 함께 살아가는 윤리적인 주체들이다.
