Report Errors
One of the characteristic features of the Korea labor regime is the holistically social imbalance between the economic and the social in normative terms. This essay proposes a lens of moral economy, which is based on the arguments of K. Polanyi, A. Sayer and etc., to evaluate several current labor relations issues including labor market polarization, social divide, and the social imbalance. The moral economy provides a variety of implications on the principles of market society and labor relations. Among them are the difficulties of harmony between flexible market and stable society, the importance of social countermovement, and employment as a relationship rooted in a web of social dependences. In particular, it is emphasized that thick labor relations produce valuable ethical surpluses that represent mutuality and human flourishing. Applying such a framework of the moral economy to the analysis of the current labor issues enables a fresh interpretation, including ethical inadequacies of neglecting human aspect and conceptual pitfalls of analytically separating the economic from the social. The paper concludes that it is important to strike a balance between the economic and the social in labor relationships.
