Lee Hae Jo is a Korean intellectual active in the Patriotic Enlightenment Movement, who played various roles not limited to teacher, newspaper and journal editor and novelist. Being a writer with strong feminist consciousness, he deems feminism as a task to be achieved in saving the nation and enlightening the people. Lee advocates the establishment of women’s university and female journals, as a means to emancipate women. In addition to his devotion to women’s education, in the sphere of literature, Lee also wrote a range of “female novels” on the topic of women’s education, free love and women’s social participation. Among his works, 〈Hong Do Hwa〉 and 〈Ja You Zong〉 are the representative ones reflecting his feminist ideas. In his literary works Lee stresses that woman should detach from traditional conventions and thus become a citizen enjoying both rights and social roles. Meanwhile, he proposes that female should transform themselves to be modern women.
In many ways, the ideological context bred Lee’s feminist consciousness is closely related to the feminism argued by the Chinese intellectual Liang Qi Chao. In face of the fall of imperialism and the brink of colonization in China, Liang actively promotes modern feminist ideas through the newspapers and journals he launched, as a part of his project of patriotic enlightenment. Meanwhile, Liang writes biographies of patriotic female figures while actively backing the liberation of women. Lee is also a reader of Liang’s articles in that period. In his novels, Lee also adapts and embodies Liang’s ideas according to the Korean contexts. All in all, both Lee and Liang convey similar visions in disseminating feminism. They urge to enlighten mothers to provide high quality education to their children, transforming the women to be individual citizens who are involved in economic activities, can participate in patriotic enlightenment, and can aid the revival of national sovereignty. a
