“Sustainability is the need of today to ‘sustain and maintain’ a beautiful future”
Sustainability in Indian culture is a way to live life. The 6 R’s of sustainability- Rethink (Before buying), Refuse (if not necessary), Reduce (cut down the amount used), Reuse (use a product to make something else), Recycle (reprocess a material or product) and Repair (Try to fix the product before discarding) are well practiced and transferred from generation to generation. Kantha embroidery is a great example of how sustainability is deep rooted in our culture. This can also be experienced in the life of Buddhist Monks. (A Buddhist Recycling Story, 2007) They follow the 6 R’s religiously to maintain the balance of mother earth. They use and re-use their clothing till it is used as the plaster for the domes or as twig of the oil lamps.
Many Non-Government organizations are also working in the field of 6 R’s directly or indirectly. Some are developing ways to conserve resources and some explore with the way to recycle old clothes to create new product. (Goswami, P. 2008) This paper is an effort towards emphasizing the embedded Sustainability in Indian craft and culture. The textile educationists, designers, NGO’s and students are working together to reframe sustainability and practice it in their lives.
