In the ongoing discussion on the sustainability of the spatial environment, where the implications of sustainability arechanging according to social context and trends, it is necessary to systematically compile previous research to establishfoundational data for discussing future development directions and planning subsequent research. The purpose of this study isto identify trends in domestic prior research on the sustainability of the spatial environment. The research method involvedanalyzing literature with the keyword 'sustainability' in the RISS (Korean Education and Research Information Service) database. The analysis focused on papers published after 1996, when the Habitat II conference initiated active and detailed discussions onsustainable spaces. A total of 263 papers related to the spatial environment were collected and analyzed. The scope of theanalysis includes publication year, journal field, research scope, subjects of analysis, research purpose, and research methods. The main research findings are as follows: First, the research results indicate that the number of papers related to sustainabilityhas been steadily increasing. Second, while early studies on sustainability primarily focused on national land, cities, and regions,recent research has expanded its diversity to include smaller spatial scales, such as architecture and interior spaces. Third,when examining the purposes of sustainability research, many studies focus on developing indicators or conducting comparativeanalyses, and utilizing these to evaluate and analyze case studies. Lastly, when examining the areas of sustainability, earlyresearch predominantly focused on environmental approaches. However, recent studies have increasingly emphasized social andeconomic perspectives. This indicates that the traditional approach of emphasizing only environmental sustainability is limited,and there is a widespread societal recognition of the need for a comprehensive approach that also considers economicefficiency and social symbiosis. Sustainable development can only achieve true sustainability when it encompassesenvironmental, social, and economic aspects. Therefore, such a comprehensive approach can effectively contribute to improvingsustainability across society.
