This paper examines representation of femininity and class mobility in nineteenth-century American sensation novel focusing on Louisa May Alcott’s Behind a Mask or A Woman’s Power. Alcott dramatizes the interrelations of femininity and woman’s power through Jean Muir’s disguise and performance of multiple identities in the Coventry home. As the skillful governess, Jean’s strategy of using feminine mask to achieve her aim shows that the market economy has already pervaded the high and middle-class home in the nineteenth-century America. In addition, Alcott leads the reader to explore the process of gender transformation and class mobility through Jean’s manipulation of family members and her final success. Alcott’s use of themes and motifs of sensation novel is linked to her desire to reveal the underside of contemporary middle class value system of domesticity and femininity.
