Paul Carus(1852-1919), was a philosopher who moved from his native Germany to the United States when he was 32 years old. He was soon the first managing editor of the Open Court Publishing Company in La Salle, Illinois. There he became known for his literary efforts to popularize Buddhism in the United States, being one the first translation sponsors of D. T. Suzuki’s work into English. Carus’ main concern was to propagate the “Religion of Science,” an odd-sounding phrase today because of these two domains are often strictly-segregated. However, this paper pays attention to this term, because it reminds the modern mind of mostly-ignored historical events in the lively, multi-layered historical discourses among the fields of religion and science.
Specifically, I first analyze the very fundamental idea of “Religion of Science” itself relating such to Ernst Haeckel’s monism as a secular religion against conventional Christianity. Second, this article examines Carus’ vision of what he viewed as evolving religions, and his attempts to unify them using his Religion of Science principles. After participating in the 1893 World Parliament of Religions, Carus attempted to show how Buddhism (in The Gospel of Buddha) was an authentic religion in its own right, one that would tend—in dialogue with Christianity—to essentialize Christianity. Both religions could evolve. When duly considered today, the Religion of Science demonstrated how science played key supporting roles in global religious discourses. The Religion of Science was also an archetypal model that showed how peripheral and contingent contact between religions of the world can be seen as key moments in the evolution of religious understanding.
