The methodology used by current teachers in the Chinese education sector has become much more complex compared to the past. The teachers are definitely putting more emphasis on interactive activities with students than before and most of the classes are being conducted with student focused learning. With such developments, methodologies which put priority on activities between teacher and students are gaining importance. However, in reality, it is the teachers who have the actual authority in the classrooms which puts a limit in the students exercising their right to speak up. In this sense, it is simply no easy matter to execute the true meaning of student centered learning.
This paper deals with observations in two Chinese classrooms. There were slight differences between the teachers who conducted the classrooms but it was obvious that they were both dominating the classrooms. They were limiting the contents of the student speaking within the class and were taking control of the turn-taking in the conversations. Most of the teachers were allocating the right to speak to the students and were encouraging the students to say the answers of the questions that were suggested by the teachers. That being the case, the students carried out the interactions with short answers in the classroom setting. This led to the result where the students made only short sentences or even answered in monosyllables. This is probably because the level of the classrooms that were observed were elementary levels. If this kind of phenomena had occurred even in the higher levels, we would have been able to conclude that the teachers did not carry out student centered classes by any means in the truest meaning of the word.
