The purpose of this paper is to examine the `cognitive structure` and `asymmetry` of synonyms in the cognitive linguistic approach. Above all, asymmetry means that one of the synonyms differs from the other in its characteristics such as structure, frequency or cognition. First, Structural asymmetry of synonyms is closely related to markedness. Of the elements in a category, an original form is neutral and unmarked syntactically as well as morphologically, while peripheral elements are marked on account of a few grammatical limitations. Take `father-daddy` for instance. The former is semantically unmarked, whereas the latter is specialized in that it`s a children`s language, thus in a general and objective situation the latter is embodied after neutralized by the former unmarked element. Second, asymmetry in frequency is considered in two aspects, one of which is asymmetry formed and distributed according to parts of speech and etymology of the elements of synonyms and the other of which is asymmetry in frequency, that is one element`s being used more in a context than the other. To investigate it, this study has picked the items of synonyms used in the elementary school texts and examined the frequency of them as follows; Finally cognitive asymmetry comes out when there are two words with the same meaning but one is a cognitively clear and manifest model and the other is not.
