The purpose of this study is to research into characteristic and background of minimal music shown in movies and to seek for the correlation between a movie and music and for a role and function of minimal music. To pursue the background of minimal music that is shown in movies, it figured out the occurring process and characteristic of minimal music and the musical characteristic in Steve Reich and Philip Glass who are the representative minimal composers. In the musical analysis, the music was analyzed along with the plots in the movies 〈Inception(2010)〉, 〈Gravity(2013)〉, 〈SILENCED(2011)〉 and the contents in a scene that minimal music appeared.
As a result of the study, the minimal music in three movies, first, brings an effect that allows the spectators to be immersed in a story inside the flowing image with the repetition of the constantly simple rhythm and harmony. Second, a music style of communicating with the core theme in a movie is shown in the aspect of showing reality that cannot escape even if trying to find the way out of the restricted situation. Third, the moderate beauty and the sophistication, which are shown in a modern movie, were indicated while addressing a basic pattern as a central material in the simply fixed unit and interrupting the excessively dramatic expression from diluting the theme of a movie or rather from reinforcing the excessively emotional aspect.
