Guiora et. al (1969) suggested that empathy plays an important role in improving foreign language learning and extending language-ego in psychological aspects. Rizzolatti et al (1996) also emphasized the value of empathy by giving an explanation of 'mirror neurons' that empathetic capacity involved in human beings' learning through imitation exist in the human neuron system. Adank, Hagoort, & Bekkering (2010) stated that imitating foreign accents contribute to improving language learning and Chen (2008) argued that empathetic state affects the fluency of foreign language learners. However, studies on the correlation between empathy index and English learning in writing ability have been rare. This study paid attention to the probability of whether there is a correlation between empathy capability and writing skills. The subjects were 163 university students from various majors which are civil engineering, advanced materials engineering, English literature and language, tourism and economics and they were asked to answer a questionnaire for evaluating empathy level and were given an English writing task with the title of 'introducing yourself'. The writing task was carried out during the class with 30 minutes of time constraints. The mean length of T-unit(MLTU) of each subject was obtained from the analysis of writing data. Based on the average length of T-unit and empathy index score, Pearson's product moment correlation coefficient was produced. The output showed a significant correlation between the two factors, which implied that students with higher empathy score were inclined to have better English writing abilities and show a little more fluency in English writing. From the results, it is expected that the roles of empathy in learning are recognized again and accomplished with the curriculum relative to it in classroom settings, ending up with improvement of students' learning capabilities.
